China's steel exports have increased dramatically since 2023. According to Chinese customs data, China's steel exports totaled 58.79 million tons from January to August 2023, representing a 28.4% increase year on year.
Three important variables are responsible for China's rapid development in steel exports. For starters, Chinese steel and iron goods continue to be competitive in terms of pricing. Second, the yuan's depreciation against the US dollar has increased China's competitive advantage in the steel industry. Third, Chinese authorities have developed foreign trade regulations that encourage and facilitate steel exports.
These factors have resulted to a significant increase in Chinese steel exports in 2023.
