Carbon Tool Steel is a high-performance, cost-effective specialized steel designed for manufacturing tools that demand superior hardness, strength, and wear resistance. Characterized by a high carbon content typically ranging between 0.60% and 1.50%, this material is the foundational standard for the tooling industry.
Known for its exceptional machinability in the annealed state and ability to achieve high hardness (HRC) through quenching and tempering, Carbon Tool Steel is the preferred choice for applications where high-temperature red hardness is not required, but surface hardness and a tough core are essential. It serves as a critical material for producing cutting tools, precision measuring instruments, and robust dies across the automotive, construction, and manufacturing sectors.

Key Features and Advantages
High Surface Hardness
Through professional heat treatment (quenching and tempering), Carbon Tool Steel achieves exceptional hardness, ideal for cutting and shaping tools that must maintain a sharp edge.
01
Superior Wear Resistance
The microstructure ensures a long service life even under rigorous use and constant friction.
02
Excellent Machinability
In its annealed state, this steel is easier to machine than high-alloy steels, allowing for the creation of complex tool designs and precision instruments.
03
Cost-Effective Performance
Compared to High-Speed Steel (HSS) or High-Alloy Tool Steels, Carbon Tool Steel offers a more affordable solution for applications where extreme red hardness (high-temperature resistance) is not required.
04
High Impact Strength
Grades with lower carbon content (like T7) offer higher tensile strength and toughness, suitable for tools subjected to mechanical stress and impact.
05
Typical Applications
Carbon Tool Steel is versatile and "Cost-Effective," making it suitable for a wide range of industrial tooling applications.

FAQ
Q1: What is the difference between Carbon Tool Steel and High-Speed Steel (HSS)?
A1: Carbon Tool Steel is cost-effective and offers excellent hardness at room temperature but loses hardness above 200°C. HSS (like M2 or M35) contains tungsten/molybdenum and retains hardness at much higher temperatures (red hardness), making HSS better for high-speed machining.
Q2: What does "Water Hardening" mean for grades like W1?
A2: Grades like AISI W1 (equivalent to T-series) are often water-quenched to achieve maximum hardness. They develop a hard "case" and a tough, resilient core, making them excellent for impact applications.
Q3: Which grade is best for a knife or blade?
A3: T10 (AISI W1-10 / JIS SK6) is a popular choice for blades. With ~1.0% carbon, it offers an excellent balance of hardness for edge retention and toughness to prevent chipping.
Q4: Can you supply T10A or T8A high-quality grades?
A4: Yes, we supply high-grade quality steel (marked with "A") that features lower sulfur and phosphorus content for critical applications.
