400 series stainless steel

400 series stainless steel is a family of stainless steel alloys whose main feature is a higher chromium content. This series of stainless steel mainly includes several common models, the most common of which are 410 stainless steel and 430 stainless steel. Compared with 200 series and 300 series stainless steel, 400 series stainless steel has the following characteristics:

High hardness: 400 series stainless steel has high hardness, especially 410 stainless steel, which can be obtained by heat treatment to obtain higher hardness, making it excellent in some applications requiring high strength and wear resistance.

Moderate Corrosion Resistance: 400 series stainless steel contains a higher amount of chromium, which gives it some corrosion resistance. Especially 410 stainless steel has good corrosion resistance and is suitable for some mildly corrosive environments.

Magnetic: Most 400 series stainless steels are magnetic, which makes them advantageous in certain applications.

Grindability: Due to high hardness, 400 series stainless steel is often used in the manufacture of knives and mechanical parts, such as blades, bearings, valves, etc.

Low cost: Relative to some high nickel stainless steels, the low cost of 400 series stainless steels makes them an affordable choice.

Plasticity: 400 series stainless steel has a certain degree of plasticity, and can be processed with some complex shapes.

400 series stainless steel can be further divided into several common classifications according to its specific composition and characteristics, the most common of which are 410 stainless steel and 430 stainless steel:

410 Stainless Steel (UNS S41000): 410 Stainless Steel is a general purpose low carbon stainless steel containing about 11.5%-13.5% Chromium. It has high hardness and strength, and can be further improved by heat treatment, so it is widely used in the manufacture of knives, bearings, valves, pumps and some mechanical parts.

430 stainless steel (UNS S43000): 430 stainless steel contains about 16%-18% chromium, which has a certain corrosion resistance. It is usually used in the manufacture of household appliances (such as stainless steel pots and tableware), interior decoration and certain building materials, and is suitable for some general corrosion resistance requirements.

In addition to the above two common types of stainless steel, 400 series stainless steel also includes some other special types, each type has different chemical composition and mechanical properties, suitable for specific application needs.

It should be noted that 400 series stainless steel has lower corrosion resistance and strength than 300 series stainless steel.
