A wear-plate grade label is only the beginning of a procurement decision. Why Procurement Teams Should Not Buy Wear Plate by Name Alone

A request that says only "NM500 plate" leaves too much open to interpretation.

Sliding abrasion, impact abrasion and combined wear can lead to different material priorities. Higher nominal hardness may improve abrasion resistance in some conditions, but it can also change forming, welding and repair requirements.

How to Read Published Branded Datasheets Without Making a False Equivalence Claim
Published datasheets can be valuable benchmarks for the level of information a serious supplier should disclose. For example, SSAB's official pages identify Hardox® 400 as a nominal 400 HBW product and Hardox® 500 as a nominal 500 HBW product, while publishing thickness ranges and hardness ranges by product form and thickness. Its Hardox® 500 data show different hardness ranges for 4.0-32.0 mm plate and 32.1-103.0 mm plate. This illustrates why a buyer must compare thickness-specific data rather than only the number in the grade name.
For Chinese NM grades, the same discipline should apply. Ask the supplier to state whether the quoted values are guaranteed, typical or tested results from a specific heat. A responsible RFQ can request a performance and documentation comparison. It should not demand that a third-party product be labelled as equivalent to a branded product. Define the required measurable properties and acceptance documents instead.
Hardness Is Necessary, But It Is Not the Whole Wear-Plate Story
Hardness is a major wear-resistance indicator, but procurement teams should not reduce the decision to one HBW number. Plate thickness, microstructure consistency, core hardness, toughness, weldability, dimensional quality and the actual wear mechanism all affect the value of the finished component. A plate with the correct surface hardness can still cause serious fabrication problems if it cracks during bending, is difficult to weld under the available shop conditions, or arrives with inadequate flatness for nesting and cutting.
For this reason, a quotation comparison should distinguish three categories:
(1) contractual minimums that must be satisfied;
(2) supplier-guaranteed characteristics;
(3) typical values supplied for guidance only.
These categories should never be merged in one table.
A Procurement Specification Template for NM400 and NM500
The following checklist is a practical starting point for an RFQ or purchase order. The project engineer should finalize the values and acceptance criteria before release.
- Material: NM400 or NM500 abrasion-resistant plate, with exact applicable standard and revision stated.
- Dimensions: thickness x width x length, quantity by piece and total weight, plus tolerances required for the project.
- Delivery condition: declare heat-treatment / delivery condition and surface / edge condition.
