Reasons for the formation of white rust: humid environment and oxidation reaction

White rust on the surface of galvanized steel is one of the most common problems experienced by our customers. White rust is usually a zinc oxide precipitate generated in a humid environment due to the oxidation reaction between the zinc layer and moisture and oxygen in the air. This phenomenon not only affects the appearance of galvanized steel but may also weaken its anti-corrosion properties.

The Passivate Difference: The Quality-Price Trade-Off

After further analysis, we found that the passivation treatment used on the galvanized steel coils played a key role in this problem. Galvanized steel is usually passivated during the production process to form a thin protective film that retards the oxidation of the zinc layer.

Improvements:

the introduction of light oiling and fingerprint-resistant passivation technology

In response to this problem, Promisteel took immediate steps to improve the situation. We quickly adapted our production process to enhance the surface protection of the steel coils by applying a light oiling secondary treatment. The oiling process creates an additional protective barrier on the steel surface, preventing moisture from penetrating the zinc layer and reducing the formation of white rust.

At the same time, we provide our customers with technical recommendations for upgrading the galvanized surface treatment to a fingerprint-resistant treatment or improving the passivate solution's quality for subsequent use. Fingerprint-resistant technology is an excellent choice for long-lasting rust protection, as it creates a longer-lasting, more resistant protective film that significantly slows down the oxidation of the zinc layer.
