Under the pressure of insufficient demand, Japan's steel scrap exports fell slightly month-on-month in April.

Japan's total steel scrap exports fell 2.8% month-on-month to 560,178 tonnes in April, according to Japanese customs data. In particular, shipments to South Korea fell 11.3%, 11.6% to Taiwan, and 34.5% to Vietnam. “Demand from Vietnamese mills is weak. The country’s export billet prices and domestic long products prices have also fallen. Producers cannot accept high offers for Japanese scrap,” a Japanese supplier told Metal Expert. Meanwhile, exports to Bangladesh stood at 46,535 tonnes in April, compared to zero in the previous month.

Japan's scrap exports in the first four months of this year rose 6.8% year-on-year to 2.24mt, mainly due to sales to Vietnam and Taiwan, which rose 31% and 96% respectively. However, shipments to the country fell 21% year-on-year due to competitive domestic prices, Metal Expert has learned.
