M2 High Speed Steel (HSS) is the most widely used tungsten-molybdenum high-speed steel in the world. Known as W6Mo5Cr4V2 in the GB standard and 1.3343 in DIN, M2 is celebrated for its well-balanced composition and performance.
Unlike Carbon Tool Steels, M2 HSS possesses a unique property known as "Red Hardness", allowing it to maintain a hardness of over HRC 60 even at elevated temperatures up to 500°C–600°C. This makes it significantly more effective than carbon steel for high-speed cutting applications. Its superior toughness and wear resistance have made it the standard replacement for the older Tungsten-based T1 steel, becoming the preferred material for general-purpose cutting tools and cold work dies.
Product Specifications & Grade Equivalents
We provide high-purity M2 HSS produced via EAF and ESR (Electroslag Remelting) processes to ensure minimal carbide segregation and superior structure.

Key Features and Advantages
Excellent Red Hardness
M2 retains high hardness at operational temperatures where carbon steels would soften, making it ideal for high-speed machining.
01
Balanced Toughness & Wear Resistance
The combination of Tungsten (W) and Molybdenum (Mo) provides superior toughness compared to T1 HSS, reducing the risk of chipping during interrupted cuts.
02
High Hardness
After quenching and tempering, M2 achieves a Rockwell Hardness (HRC) of 63 or more.
03
Good Machinability
In the annealed state, M2 offers relatively good machinability for complex tool shaping before heat treatment.
04
Wide Versatility
It serves as a multi-purpose steel, suitable for both cutting tools and cold work applications.
05
Typical Applications
M2 High Speed Steel is the "Go-To" material for the majority of standard tooling applications:
Cutting Tools
Twist Drills, Taps, Milling Cutters, Reamers, Broaches, Saw Blades
Cold Forming Tools
Extrusion Rams and Dies, Plastic Molds, Punches
Automotive & Aerospace
High-Temperature Bearings, Engine Parts
Knives
High-End Industrial Knives
FAQ
Q1: Why choose M2 (W6Mo5Cr4V2) over T1 High Speed Steel?
A1: M2 has replaced T1 as the industry standard because it offers better toughness and is less prone to carbide segregation, while maintaining similar hardness and wear resistance properties.
Q2: What is the typical hardness of M2 steel?
A2: After proper heat treatment (quenching at ~1220°C and tempering multiple times), M2 typically achieves a hardness of 63-65 HRC.
Q3: Can M2 steel be coated?
A3: Yes, M2 substrates are excellent for surface coatings like TiN (Titanium Nitride), which further enhances wear resistance and tool life.
Q4: What is the difference between M2 and M35?
A4: M2 is a general-purpose HSS. M35 contains added Cobalt (typically 5%), which significantly improves hot hardness and heat resistance, making M35 better suited for cutting harder materials like stainless steel.
