Cast steel grit is produced by crushing high-carbon cast steel shot to create angular particles. Its edges cut into compact scale and contamination, making it suitable for heavier cleaning work and for developing the anchor profile required by coating systems.
As a steel grit media, it is selected around contamination level, workpiece geometry, blast method, target profile and the required balance between cutting speed and abrasive life. Sandblasting steel grit can be effective in air-blast work as well, but the grade must suit the equipment and recovery system. Confirm the selected crushed steel shot grade through a controlled line trial.
GP, GL and GH are commonly used steel-grit hardness labels, but their exact ranges can differ between suppliers. Confirm the agreed HRC range and certificate requirement; do not select by the letters alone.

Hardness-grade selection
General-purpose grit
A lower or medium hardness range is often chosen for general cleaning where durability and a progressively rounded working mix are useful. It can be a practical first option, but it is not automatically the best option for every coating profile.
Higher-hardness grit
A higher hardness range is commonly considered where stronger cutting action, removal of compact scale or more persistent angularity is needed. It can also change breakdown, dust and recovery behaviour, so confirm it with the actual separator and workpiece.

For coating preparation, the useful question is not only whether the grit removes scale. It is whether it holds a controllable working mix and repeatedly reaches the required cleanliness and anchor profile.
