Product Introduction

Cast steel shot is a round, reusable metallic blasting medium. Its spherical particle shape produces a uniform impact action that is commonly selected for descaling, surface cleaning, finishing and controlled surface treatment in wheel-blast lines.

As a steel shot media, it is usually selected where a stable working mix and even impact are more important than the cutting action of angular grit. The right round steel shot is chosen against the workpiece, contamination, machine configuration and required surface result; Promisteel supports trial-based selection rather than a one-grade recommendation for every production line.

For fatigue-critical peening, do not assume a general blast-cleaning grade meets the required peening specification. Confirm media, intensity and process controls against the customer's approved procedure before quotation.

Size guide

For finer workpieces and specified finishing or treatment processes.Common starting range for general cleaning and pretreatment. For heavier scale, larger workpieces and more aggressive cleaning requirements.

The size labels above are not a final application recommendation. Validate the grade through a stable line trial, including media top-up, separator condition and the achieved surface result.

Specification boundary

Industrial blast cleaning and critical peening are not the same order

Industrial steel shot blasting media

SAE J444 provides the size-designation framework for cast shot and grit. SAE J827 addresses high-carbon cast steel shot for peening and blast cleaning. For normal production cleaning, define the size distribution, hardness, packaging and the batch documents required.

Controlled or fatigue-critical peening

Where the customer process calls for an aerospace or other controlled peening specification, the ordered media and approval evidence must be stated explicitly. Media size alone does not validate intensity, coverage, machine settings or the complete peening procedure.

Quality plan

What to verify for a reliable working mix
Nominal size is only the start. The quality plan should be fixed before the trial when output, dust control or component quality is sensitive.

Inspection itemWhy it matters
Screen size distributionControls the impact range and helps keep the working mix aligned with the process target.
Hardness distributionInfluences breakdown behaviour, abrasive life and the balance between cleaning rate and stability.
Density and microstructureSupport consistent impact energy and heat-treatment quality; agree the test method if these are release criteria.
Particle form and internal conditionExcessive irregular particles, voids, shrinkage or cracks can increase early breakdown and fines.
Certificate and traceabilityConnect the delivered lot to the agreed tests, acceptance criteria and packing identification.

Agree the inspection item, test method, acceptance limit and certificate format with the buyer. Do not assume one supplier's internal QC thresholds apply to every project.

Machine and process fit

Where cast steel shot is commonly used

Steel Structures

Roller-conveyor blast cleaning of H-beams, plates and fabricated sections before coating. A common starting range is S280–S330, subject to the required profile.

Castings & Machinery

Cleaning rust, scale and residual casting sand from frames, structural parts and heavy components.

Automotive Components

Cleaning prior to e-coating and other specified surface-treatment processes. Confirm separate requirements for any peening operation.

Quality and trial support

Evaluate the operating cost, not only the quote

Two steel shot media products with the same nominal size can perform differently due to hardness distribution, density, heat treatment and fines generation. Compare cost per accepted cleaned area or part, rather than FOB price per ton alone.

  • Keep blast time, wheel speed, workpiece mix and separator settings stable during the trial.
  • Record new-media top-up in kg/hour, accepted output, dust and fines.
  • Check surface cleanliness, roughness, machine current and separator condition.
  • Request the applicable COA, TDS or SDS for the confirmed grade or batch.

FAQ

Q: How do I choose the correct steel shot size?

A: Provide the workpiece material and dimensions, current surface condition, blast machine, current media, required cleanliness or roughness and production rate. The final grade should be validated on the production line.

Q: Does SAE size classification make the product automatically suitable for peening?

A: No. SAE size designation addresses the media-size convention. A critical peening order also needs the customer's applicable media specification, process approval and verification requirements.

Q: What information is needed for a useful line trial?

A: State the existing media and top-up rate, machine type and settings, separator condition, workpiece mix, target surface result, monthly consumption and how you will measure acceptance.

Q: Can I receive a sample and batch documents?

A: A 1–5 kg evaluation sample may be arranged for qualified projects. The applicable COA, TDS or SDS is supplied according to the confirmed product and batch.
