China–US Tariff Adjustments Mark a Positive Shift for Global Steel Trade
Promisteel Industry Update
In a significant breakthrough for international trade, China and the United States have jointly agreed to adjust tariffs on select imports and exports, marking a positive turning point in global economic cooperation. This change, set to take effect on May 14, 2025-is expected to ease long-standing trade tensions and create new growth opportunities for steel exporters and manufacturers worldwide, including suppliers like Promisteel, a global leader in HR, CR, GI, and GRGO steel coil solutions.
🔍 Key Details of the Tariff Agreement
Under the agreement, the US will revise tariffs imposed via Executive Order 14257 (April 2, 2025) on a broad range of Chinese-origin products, including those from Hong Kong and Macau. Notably:
24% of these tariffs will be suspended for an initial 90-day period
The remaining 10% will remain active as per the order
Tariffs established under Executive Orders 14259 and 14266 will be fully revoked
Simultaneously, China will adjust its ad valorem tariffs on U.S. goods as per Tariff Commission Announcement 2025 No. 4, with a mirrored approach:
24% of tariffs paused for 90 days
10% retained for now
Tariffs outlined in Announcements 2025 No. 5 and 6 will be canceled
China will also suspend or repeal non-tariff retaliatory measures against U.S. imports, effective April 2, 2025
🌐 Implications for the Global Steel Industry
This mutual tariff relief is a timely boost for the global steel trade, especially in sectors impacted by recent policy frictions. Exporters of hot rolled coils (HR steel), cold rolled coils (CR steel), galvanized coils (GI steel), and grain-oriented electrical steel (GRGO) are expected to benefit significantly from the reduced trade barriers.
As a trusted supplier of value-added steel products, Promisteel welcomes this development. With over two decades of export expertise, we serve clients across construction, power distribution, automotive, and appliance manufacturing, providing:
High-quality HR & CR steel coils
Anti-corrosion GI coils for roofing & structural use
Precision-processed GRGO electrical steel for transformers and power systems
The suspension of punitive tariffs is expected to reduce procurement costs, stabilize supply chains, and enhance global competitiveness, especially for companies sourcing Chinese-origin steel coils or exporting advanced-grade materials to North America.
🤝 Continuing Dialogue & Bilateral Cooperation
Looking forward, both nations have committed to establishing a formal negotiation framework to promote long-term trade stability:
Vice Premier He Lifeng will lead China's delegation
U.S. representatives include Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jaime Gril
Discussions may take place in either country or a mutually agreed-upon third-party nation
Ongoing working-level talks will address key economic and trade matters as needed
